This era, known as the Enlightenment Period, was a critical turning point in Korean modern history marked by the collision between tradition and modernity, independence, and subjugation.

Following the Treaty of Ganghwa in 1876, Joseon opened its doors to foreign powers, and Western culture and institutions began to flow into the country. However, this opening was not a process of autonomous modernization but rather occurred amid competition among imperial powers for influence and concessions. In 1895, Empress Myeongseong (1851-1895) was murdered by Japanese assassins during what became known as the Eulmi Incident. Mr. Sunshine unfolds primarily in Hanseong (present-day Seoul) and Jemulpo (present-day Incheon) against this historical backdrop.
