템플스테이는 전통 사찰에서 머물며 불교문화와 수행을 직접 체험하는 한국의 대표적인 체험형 문화프로그램이다. 조용한 산사의 일상에 참여하며 스스로를 돌아보고 마음의 평화를 찾는 시간을 갖는 것이 핵심이다. 2002년 한일 월드컵을 계기로 시작된 이래, 현재 약 150여 개 사찰에서 운영되고 있으며, 유네스코 세계유산으로 등재된 7개 산사 중 영주 부석사를 제외한 여섯 곳에서도 템플스테이 프로그램이 진행되고 있다.

특히 통도사, 법주사, 마곡사, 대흥사는 외국인을 위한 템플스테이 전문 운영사찰로 지정되어 있으며, 그중 통도사는 사찰음식의 전통과 고유한 조리법을 계승하는 사찰음식 특화사찰로도 잘 알려져 있다.

템플스테이는 공식 홈페이지(www.templestay.com)에서 간편하게 예약할 수 있다. 참가자는 사찰별 프로그램 소개와 일정, 숙박형 또는 당일형 여부를 확인한 뒤 예약 및 결제를 진행하면 된다. 개인·가족·단체 등 다양한 형태로 신청이 가능하며, 일부 사찰에서는 외국인을 위한 영어 안내와 통역 서비스를 제공한다.

Templestay in Korea’s World Heritage Mountain Monasteries

Templestay is one of Korea’s most distinctive cultural programs, offering participants the opportunity to experience Buddhist culture and monastic life by staying at a traditional temple. It provides time for quiet reflection and peace of mind while taking part in the daily routine of a serene mountain monastery. First introduced in 2002 during the Korea–Japan World Cup, the program has since expanded to around 150 temples nationwide. Among the seven Buddhist mountain monasteries inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, six—except for Buseoksa Temple in Yeongju—operate templestay programs that allow both Koreans and international visitors to experience the living tradition of Korean Buddhism.

Tongdosa, Beopjusa, Magoksa, and Daeheungsa are designated as Templestay for International Participants Temples, providing customized programs and English-language support for visitors from around the world. In particular, Tongdosa is also recognized as a Temple Food Heritage Temple, preserving and passing down the authentic recipes and traditions of Korean Buddhist cuisine.

Reservations can be made easily through the official Templestay website (www.templestay.com). Participants can browse temple programs, schedules, and formats—whether overnight or one-day—and complete registration and payment online. Applications are open to individuals, families, and groups, and several temples provide English-language guidance and interpretation services for foreign visitors.

Templestay programs are generally divided into rest-oriented and experience-oriented types. The rest-oriented templestay focuses on meditation, quiet walks, and tea conversation in the peaceful natural setting of a mountain temple, offering relaxation and mindfulness. The experience-oriented templestay allows participants to take part in traditional Buddhist practices such as Buddhist service, 108 prostrations, monastic meal, tea ceremony, lotus lantern making, and cultural heritage tours.

At the Templestay Information Center in Jongno, Seoul, visitors can learn about Buddhist culture, explore details of participating temples across the country, and receive assistance with reservations and program information.
