Akmal, originally from Uzbekistan, is an international student studying sociology in South Korea. Through his experiences, he has witnessed how strong the interest in the Korean Wave (Hallyu) is in Uzbekistan, especially the passion for Korean dramas.

Akmal is particularly aware of how popular the drama Dae Jang Geum is in his home country. Broadcast overseas, Dae Jang Geum has been loved by audiences in many countries, and Uzbekistan is one of them. Its popularity stands as a successful example of Korean drama exports, turning Uzbekistan—along with many other countries—into devoted fan nations of Korean dramas.

As he observes Hallyu spreading across Asia, Akmal enjoys living in a multicultural environment as a sociology student. With the growth of Hallyu tourism, drama tours have become a new form of cultural experience, and by directly engaging in this cultural exchange, Akmal finds his life as an international student richer and more fulfilling.

Akmal has come to realize that the success of these dramas and of Hallyu goes beyond simple cultural exchange, strengthening cultural ties between Uzbekistan and South Korea. Through his experiences in Korea, he hopes to deepen mutual understanding between the two countries when he returns to Uzbekistan.

아크말의 편의점 이야기 / Akmal’s Convenience Store Story

아크말은 한국에서 공부하는 우즈베키스탄 학생입니다. 한국 생활에 익숙해진 그는 어느 날 밤, 배고픔을 참지 못하고 24시간 편의점을 찾았습니다. 편의점은 다양한 종류의 라면과 토핑 재료로 가득 차 있었습니다. 그는 삼각김밥 코너로 향했습니다. 삼각김밥은 다양한 속재료로 가득 차 있는 간편식으로, 참치마요 삼각김밥이 가장 인기가 많았습니다. 아크말은 참치마요 삼각김밥을 집어 들었습니다. 그는 편의점 전자레인지 코너로 가서 삼각김밥을 데웠습니다. 이곳에서 혼밥을 즐기는 사람들을 보며, 아크말도 편의점 테이블에 앉아 혼자 조용히 식사를 시작했습니다. 밤이 깊어가면서, 아크말은 라면 한 그릇을 더 주문하여 야식으로 즐겼습니다. 편의점의 편의성에 감탄한 그는 이곳이 한국에서의 새로운 문화적 경험임을 깨달았습니다. 아크말에게 편의점은 단순한 식사 장소가 아니라, 그의 새로운 한국 생활에 없어선 안 될 중요한 장소가 되었습니다.

Akmal is a student from Uzbekistan studying in South Korea. Having grown accustomed to life in Korea, one night he couldn’t resist his hunger and went to a 24-hour convenience store. The store was filled with a wide variety of ramen and topping ingredients. He headed to the triangle kimbap section. Triangle kimbap is a convenient food packed with various fillings, and tuna mayo triangle kimbap is the most popular. Akmal picked up a tuna mayo triangle kimbap.

He went to the microwave corner of the convenience store and heated the triangle kimbap. Watching people enjoy eating alone there, Akmal also sat at a convenience store table and quietly began his solo meal. As the night grew deeper, he ordered a bowl of ramen as well and enjoyed it as a late-night snack.

Impressed by the convenience of the store, he realized that it was a new cultural experience in Korea. For Akmal, the convenience store became not just a place to eat, but an essential part of his new life in Korea.

할류와 외국인의 다채로운 연대 / Hallyu and the Diverse Solidarity of Foreigners
