Korean period dramas and films are important media for introducing tradtioinal Korean attire, or hanbok, to the public, conveying the beauty and cultural significance of hanbok through the recreation of historical settings. Particularly, period content broadcast worldwide through global OTT platforms has significantly heightened international interest in traditional Korean clothing.

A representative period drama is Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace, 2003). This drama tells the story of a female royal physician (uinyeo) in the Joseon period (1392-1910) and gained great popularity through its meticulous recreation of court attire and medical women’s hanbok of that time. Dae Jang Geum, as a representative work of early Korean Wave, was broadcast throughout Asia and sparked interest in hanbok. Mr. Sunshine (2018) is a drama set during Korea’s enlightenment period in the late 19th to early 20th century, effectively showing the era when various types of Joseon-era dress and modern clothing coexisted. The costume designer delicately expressed royal attire, aristocratic dress, and righteous army uniforms based on historical research.

The Netflix original series Kingdom (2019), a zombie thriller set in the Joseon period, generated tremendous global buzz.
