제주해녀문화는 산소 장비 없이 잠수하는 해녀들의 전통적 어로 기술과, 이를 기반으로 형성된 여성 중심의 공동체 협력과 지식 전승 체계를 보여주는 문화유산이다. 이 문화는 자연 환경에 대한 지속 가능한 이용 방식과 세대 간 기술 전승, 공동체적 연대라는 보편적 가치를 지니고 있어 2016년 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 등재되었다.

The Culture of Jeju Haenyeo (women divers) is a cultural heritage centered on the traditional fishing practices of women divers who dive without oxygen equipment, together with women-centered forms of community cooperation that structure their everyday lives. Rooted in the sustainable use of the marine environment and the intergenerational transmission of livelihood-related practices and know-how, this culture was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

Efforts to document and interpret this culture have led to a range of audiovisual works. Director Koh Hee-young documented the working practices and everyday lives of women divers in the documentaries <i>Breathing Underwater</i> (2016) and <i>Legend of the Waterflowers</i> (2023). <i>Breathing Underwater</i> received a Special Mention Award at the 17th Jeonju International Film Festival. The documentary <i>The Last of the Sea Women</i> (2024) focuses on the cooperation between younger and older generations of women divers in sustaining their traditions and was awarded the NETPAC Award at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival.

Women divers have also been featured as key subjects in popular culture, including films and television series. O Meul’s film <i>Mermaid Unlimited</i> (2016) portrays women divers taking on synchronized swimming challenges, while the television series <i>When Life Gives You Tangerines</i>, directed by Kim Won-suk, depicts the lives of women divers across generations.
