Set during the late 19th and early 20th century Enlightenment Period, the drama unfolds primarily in Hanseong (present-day Seoul) and Jemulpo (present-day Incheon), depicting the era's atmosphere through historical locations and cultural heritage sites.

Hanseong, the capital of Joseon and later the Korean Empire, serves as the drama's main setting. Royal palaces such as Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung appear as imperial spaces, while the Jeongdong area represents the foreign legation district. Jemulpo, which opened as a treaty port in 1883, symbolizes the coexistence of tradition and modernity during the Enlightenment Period, with foreign settlement zones and modern buildings alongside traditional Korean structures.

To recreate this historical era, the production team constructed Sunshine Studio, a massive 20,000-square-meter set in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. The set meticulously recreates early 1900s Korean streets, featuring traditional tiled houses of aristocrats, thatched houses of commoners, modernized buildings, Hanseong trams, Hansung Electric Power Company, and a tailor shop. Glory Hotel, the drama's central location, remains preserved along with bakeries, bars, bridges, and train stations exactly as they appeared in the series. An additional 6,600-square-meter indoor set was built in Daejeon for palace interiors and indoor scenes. Filming, which began in September 2017, also took place across Korea in cities including Busan, Daegu, Gokseong, Gyeongju, and Hapcheon.

Following the broadcast, Nonsan Sunshine Studio has become a major Korean Wave tourism destination. Visitors can photograph locations where scenes were filmed and rent period costumes to experience 1900s attire. The drama's soundtrack plays throughout the site, and photographs from key scenes are displayed, allowing visitors to relive memorable moments. The facility continues to function as important infrastructure for Korea's visual content industry and as a cultural tourism resource.
