In the 21st-century, traditional Korean music (<i>gugak</i>) is experiencing a new golden age through bold experimentation by young musicians. Artists including Lee Hee-moon, Junggagakhoe, SSING SSING, Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7), Go Sang-ji, Hwang Jin-ah, and Song So-hee combine traditional music with contemporary genres including jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, leading the popularization and globalization of traditional Korean music. Their activities prove that traditional music is not merely cultural heritage to preserve but living art in ongoing evolution.

Lee Hee-moon is a zither (<i>gayageum</i>) player and composer who creates original sounds through the “Lee Hee-Moon Project” by playing the zither like an electric guitar or combining it with jazz and funk rhythms. Junggagakhoe is a vocal group that contemporarily reinterprets nepic chant (<i>pansori</i>) and  poetic vocal music (<i>jeongga</i>), continuously experimenting by combining traditional folk songs (<i>minyo</i>) with jazz and Latin rhythms. SSING SSING is a fusion band based on traditional instrumental ensemble (<i>sinawi</i>), presenting energetic performances by combining traditional instruments including the two-stringed fiddle (<i>haegeum</i>), bowed zither (<i>ajaeng</i>), bamboo flute (<i>daegeum</i>), and hourglass drum (<i>janggu</i>) with bass and drums. Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7) is a nine-member band formed in 2015 that specializes in shamanic music (<i>gut</i>) and folk songs from Hwanghae-do Province, creating what they describe as “Korean psychedelic” sound through intense performances featuring colorful costumes and choreographed dance moves. Go Sang-ji is a six-stringed zither (<i>geomungo</i>) player who gained attention through radical attempts such as playing the instrument like a guitar or combining it with electronic music. Hwang Jin-ah expanded the zither’s expressive range by traversing classical, jazz, and world music. Song So-hee is a young <i>pansori</i> master who contributed to popularizing the art form by reinterpreting it with contemporary sensibilities.

These experiments meet the public through the National Gugak Center, Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, and the Jeonju World Sori Festival. The National Gugak Center supports both traditional preservation and contemporary creation, while Seoul Namsan Gugakdang actively plans crossover performances. The Jeonju World Sori Festival promotes exchange between Korean traditional music and world music, providing a platform for young musicians to advance internationally. Young traditional musicians’ creative attempts explore new musical possibilities while respecting traditional spirit, making traditional music approachable to younger generations and global audiences.
