Korean literary works have been reborn as films, reaching broader audiences and sometimes even driving social change. Stories expressed in text have been realized on screen, delivering the messages of the original works with new emotion and resonance.

Director Im Kwon-taek’s film <i>Seopyeonje</i> (1993) is based on Yi Cheong-jun’s novel of the same title. This work, which re-examined <i>pansori</i> as a symbolic art of Korean culture through the tragic lives of one family, swept the Best Picture awards at the 1993 Daejong Film Awards, Blue Dragon Awards, and Chunsa Film Festival, as well as the 1994 Baeksang Arts Awards, demonstrating the artistic merit of Korean cinema. Director Im Kwon-taek later released the film <i>Beyond the Years</i> (2006), a sequel to <i>Seopyeonje</i>, based on Yi Cheong-jun’s novel <i>Seonhakdong nageune</i> (The Wanderer of Seonhakdong Village).

Novelist Gong Ji-young’s works have also been adapted into films, generating social impact. <i>Our Happy Time</i> (2005) explores the dignity of life and forgiveness through the encounter between a death row inmate and a woman suffering from suicidal impulses. The 2011 film <i>Silenced</i> directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk generated significant social response, reigniting public outrage. This led to legislative reform, resulting in the enactment of the so-called “Dogani Law” (Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes), which included provisions such as the abolition of the statute of limitations for sexual crimes against children and adolescents. It was a case where film directly catalyzed social change.

Cho Nam-ju’s novel <i>Kim Ji-young: Born 1982</i> (2016) shows how pervasive gender discrimination constrains and oppresses women’s lives through the life of Kim Ji-young, a woman born in 1982. Jung Yu-mi, who played the protagonist Kim Ji-young in the 2019 film of the same title, won Best Actress awards at the 2020 Chunsa Film Festival and the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, receiving recognition for the work’s artistic merit.
