Korean period dramas and films are important media for introducing tradtioinal Korean attire, or <i>hanbok</i>, to the public, conveying the beauty and cultural significance of <i>hanbok</i> through the recreation of historical settings. Particularly, period content broadcast worldwide through global OTT platforms has significantly heightened international interest in traditional Korean clothing.

A representative period drama is <i>Dae Jang Geum</i> (Jewel in the Palace, 2003). This drama tells the story of a female royal physician (<i>uinyeo</i>) in the Joseon period (1392-1910) and gained great popularity through its meticulous recreation of court attire and medical women’s <i>hanbok</i> of that time. <i>Dae Jang Geum</i>, as a representative work of early Korean Wave, was broadcast throughout Asia and sparked interest in <i>hanbok</i>. <i>Mr. Sunshine</i> (2018) is a drama set during Korea’s enlightenment period in the late 19th to early 20th century, effectively showing the era when various types of Joseon-era dress and modern clothing coexisted. The costume designer delicately expressed royal attire, aristocratic dress, and righteous army uniforms based on historical research.

The Netflix original series <i>Kingdom</i> (2019), a zombie thriller set in the Joseon period, generated tremendous global buzz. <i>Hanbok</i> also appears in contemporary dramas. Characters participate in traditional events or are set as <i>hanbok</i> designers, naturally depicting <i>hanbok</i> as part of modern life. <i>Hanbok</i> in these dramas and films functions as an important element of storytelling beyond mere costume, becoming a means of expressing the historical period, characters’ social status, and personality. Through costume designers’ thorough research and creative interpretation, <i>hanbok</i> is vividly recreated in popular culture, greatly contributing to enhancing public interest in and understanding of <i>hanbok</i>.
