The <i>gat</i>, a traditional hat that once completed the formal attire of adult men in the Joseon dynasty, was originally part of Korea’s traditional dress culture. Made from horsehair, the hat was worn over a topknot and symbolized dignity and social status in Joseon society. A <i>gat</i> is typically accompanied by a <i>gat-string</i>, which secures the hat and completes its form, while the black horsehair hat known as <i>heukrip</i> represents one of its well-known traditional types.
